Is there the crosspoint and is there one at all?

As for an example, a big online retail shop asks me: - now we gonna sell a next notebook XYZ-1, which outperforms the smaller brother - a model XYZ. How you'd move new model to the top of ratings to make know to our customers the new model is MUCH more better??? You do understand that this situation goes on regular move.

Next example.
I have a clients which are a tourists companies and they are from the same niche. They want to be the #1 at the same time. Funny. Do you know what I do to make them successful?

Local geo companies are in big competition, especially in the same niche. The big morality of that story is to give them a non-overlapping keywords from the same semantical field. Make them a big brothers - don't try to dexter.

Definitely, social activity is a trend for online shops, but nobody knows what is good or bad, what will work or not.

In my recent interview with some big SEO company their boss asked me: - what you will do if, for example, in some abstract internet shop their marketing dep says we are going to change soon notebook x1 for a latest notebook x2 of the same brand. The question is - what you will do to prepare customers buying activity for that change?

There are tons of questions for an e-shops with a large product line with +10.000 items and more. That is THE question. What you should use - smart linkbuilding, paid online ads, smart targeting for audience, social energy, everything at once, what?

From this point I would like to understand - what tools and mechanics we have to participate in order to increase sales volume.

For now we have next social tools:

- forum
- blog
- twitter
- addthis bookmarking service
- comments everywhere
- ratings
- RSS

Forum
Forum is old ) linear structure which needs a lot of time to be alived to start working. In my practice - 1 year at least.
+ Open source forum engines are everywhere
- Difficult to make it 'living'

Blog
Blog should be written by specialists and needs a minimum literature skills. Please, ask your client how many ones in staf can really write correctly or have copywriting skills at least. And remember - we are not of copypasting anymore.
+ Again. Fast installation. Good idea, open source (Word Press), but you need a writers and the time to spend
- Writing posts need a time of your specialists

Twitter
Twitter is still a new beast, and some CEO's can't get why we need it. Microblogging is good, but, once again, you need a copywriter to create PR-pointed news, releases, actions, etc. Can you twitter yourself - great!
+ Fast delivering. Can be your #1 tool for for everything: news delivering, customers opinions, mobile shooting
- You need programming, design skills, modern way of thinking

Addthis
Very easy smart solution for every e-shop. Just add a line of JS code and you are in business. Really, very recommended.
+ Fast implementation. A very little need of programming skills
- Design, UI questions

Comments
Oh! Baby, thats it! Comments of separate product, brand is #1 TOP tool. Owning comments (even with negative commentaries of your competitors) you can create a base of your products 'real view'. And don't forget to collect e-mails of your clients.
+ Very recommended. The base of your future development and progress
- Needs programming, efforts to keep it, admin efforts (spam)

Ratings
Ratings ('Please, value this product') are mega tool! Just install with support of your programmer something like jQuery-based rating system and you will be happy to know what is your products like.
+ Very recommented. Ability to know what is your customers love. Can push up sales very effetively
- Needs a programmer

RSS
Sweet old technique to deliver a news, releases, actions, wholesales, pricelists, PR-actions, etc.
+ Fast way to group your customers on brands. Can distribute your pricelist. Enourmously useful!
- You need a programmer

Conclusion

When you start your online business or you have a client with such idea, please, describe all these opportunities. I think all recent CMS's should be equiped with all these functions, without any special add-ons or plugins. Social activity nowadays is your success.

Everything described above I brought to you as thoughts for discussion. Any real experience is welcome.

I think you can use your money in better way.

Cisco - the Father of all network gear on this Earth, got the idea from Apple and decided to impress all of us with Cius tablet (520gm, 3G/4G, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, 5Mgpx), as they told, the masterpiece based on Android OS. We are sure this a very smart piece of technology will be the next great thing.

From other hand, we need to applaud to... Google, which promote very well its Android system.

For about me? I wait for Android based mobile phone / netbook. Counting Chrome still in infant age, I don't have an ilussions we will obtain anything real soon.

Mobile optimization now

Sooner or later all Web will be Mobile, therefore mobile site optimization is one of tasks SEO freelancers will do. In 2007 I'd written an article telling how to check readiness of your site for mobiles and of mobile web dev guide.

Now we have faster processors, bigger screens and iPhone 4 & Google Phone / Android at least. Now we are to make sites mobile fast. As almost all modern mobile phones can use JS, that basic mobile optimization is based on using correct Mobile CSS. For that reason Mobify may be a good modern tool.

Instant caffeine

Google at last made us happy with arriving of Caffeine. I've almost forgot of Caffeine hype since Sept. 2009 and almost got decaffeined.

So what we have now?

Caffeine - is a new web indexing system built with nonlinear manner. That means all content analysed faster, smarter and included into index with 'pinpoint' quality. Finally that gives more relevant results.
Thanks guys for one more step toward Instant / Real Time Web!

Load time optimization

It seems Google takes page load time seriously. On Google Code page you can download and install useful FF plugin to check loading speed (docs)

Google categorized five categories that describe aspects of page load optimization:

    1) Optimizing caching — keeping your application's data and logic off the network altogether
    2) Minimizing round-trip times — reducing the number of serial request-response cycles
    3) Minimizing request overhead — reducing upload size
    4) Minimizing payload size — reducing the size of responses, downloads, and cached pages
    5) Optimizing browser rendering — improving the browser's layout of a page

Google suggested source that gives optimization rules:

    Make Fewer HTTP Requests
    Use a Content Delivery Network
    Add an Expires Header
    Gzip Components
    Put Stylesheets at the Top
    Put Scripts at the Bottom
    Avoid CSS Expressions
    Make JavaScript and CSS External
    Reduce DNS Lookups
    Minify JavaScript
    Avoid Redirects
    Remove Duplicate Scripts
    Configure ETags
    Make AJAX Cacheable

As page optimization is part of SEO - now it is time to revise your approach to on-site optimization, as high-speed broadband internet with a slow sites is nonsense.

Also, don't forget of online loading speed checking tools, for example, Pingdom, Alertsite, Webo. Even a simplest Website Speed Test can be useful in some cases. Good reading is Yahoo! YSlow.

Songwriters ask

A new message for the thieves of intellectual property: "The Songwriters Guild of America has a message for the government: start prosecuting file-sharers, both criminally and civilly, because file-sharing is much worse than bank robbery."

Stealing of content now is much worst then copypaste ideology. SEO specialists have to say - intellectual property is Gold. Please, respect it.
